Relocating our bees

Relocating our bees

Last weekend was a bitter sweet experience for us. We really enjoyed having our bees close by, because we could check on them whenever we wanted to, and it was quite therapeutic to regularly go and observe them.

However, we needed to get them over to the canola fields as soon as they started blooming. When the farmer who we previously did a bee removal for told us that his surrounding canola fields were starting to glimmer with their beautiful yellow color, we knew it was time to say goodbye to our bees.

We woke up early Saturday morning to close up the hive entrances before the bees got to work, ensuring we wouldn’t lose even one bee. Later that day, we traveled about 1.5 hours to the location and set our bee hive down on a perfect spot a few hundred meters away from the canola fields and next to a small dam.

We also placed two catch boxes nearby as we are aware of a massive bee colony living close by, but we are unable to remove them. So we will wait until they split and swarm off, in search for a new home. Conveniently, two homes will be available for them.

We cannot drive through every weekend to check on our bees, but we hope that when we see them again, they will be thriving and enjoying their independence.
