This past weekend we had the exciting experience of our first bee removal! Of course, my husband has done bee removals in the past, but this was our first one together.
The client was concerned about the bees that had moved into a wall in the new house he was building on his farm. He is deadly allergic to bees and lives far from the nearest hospital, so it was important for us to help him as soon as possible.
When we arrived, we saw we would need to drill two holes into the wall and smoke the bees out. We could then vacuum them up and hopefully catch another swarm for ourselves. However, we were concerned to see quite a few dead bees lying on the ground near their entrance.
As we started smoking the bees out, we quickly saw that they were very ill. If they were healthy, they would have quickly left their nest in masses to defend and evacuate the nest at the first sign of smoke. However, these bees slowly and one-by-one fell straight down to the ground.
We realized that they had been poisoned by surrounding farms that had been spraying their crops. It was very sad to see the bees so sick and literally not have any strength to even fly away, simply collapse. Seeing this definitely made us more aware of the harm that pesticides cause bee colonies, and we hope that this experience can bring awareness to others as well.
